About This Show

Inspired by Ovid’s major work and other Greek myths, Mary Zimmerman stages METAMORPHOSES. Framed by the well-known story of King Midas, the play delves into the stories of gods and men like King Ceyx and his wife who find eternal bliss as sea birds; foolhardy Erysichthon who sells his mother and is punished for cutting down a grove of sacred trees; the amorous Orpheus and Eurydice and nearly eight other tales of change both physical and emotional. The 90-minute journey mixes earthy humor with sudden tragedy. The fantastic staging utilizes the pool of water to create the illusion of a Hollywood swimming pool, stormy seas, and clear ponds where lovers and immortals meet.
