Squire Hardcastle wants to marry off his independent-minded daughter Kate to young Marlow, who is tongue-tied in any lady’s presence. Mrs. Hardcastle is angling for her ne’er-do-well son Tony to wed Constance, an heiress who’s already head-over-heels for Marlow’s friend Hastings. The clueless parents’ plans for arranged marriages are thrown into disarray by the mismatched pairs of young lovers and a series of mistaken identities.
