About This Show

The Book of Nathan is a play about the relationship between unjust war and political oppression, and the effect of that relationship on an American family. It is the story of Nathan Burrell, a former Army chaplain, who served in combat during the Vietnam War. He was court-martialed and sentenced to death for murdering a racist superior officer. While awaiting his execution, he is coerced by a member of the U.S. Army’s Military Intelligence Division to spy on members of his congregation back in the United States who were actively involved in the struggle for African-American civil rights.
