(L)imitations of Life is a romp of a backstage farce, a Ludlum-esque musical that delves into the world of performers’ secret desires. On the movie set where their revival of the revival of the revival of Imitation of Life is being filmed, lot of over-acting is afoot. The Lana Turner/Douglas Sirk 1959 version of the melodrama is being “imitated” in this remake, but when each performer tries to out-shine Lana Turner and steal the scene, the trouble begins. Set against the remarkable story of Fannie Hurst’s novel, this backstage farce unfolds into a hilarious and chilling examination of race, gender and class spanning from the 1950’s through to today.
