About This Show

Berkeley Repertory Theatre presents CIVIL SEX, an exploration of the life and times of Bayard Rustin, a pacifist and a leader in the civil rights movement whose sexuality set him and the movement at continual odds. The chief organizer of the March on Washington, Mr. Rustin served as an assistant to Martin Luther King Jr. During his fight for civil rights, he was arrested 22 times for acts of civil disobedience, but it was his single arrest on a “morals charge” that had the most profound affect on his career. Based on interviews with his friends, lovers, colleagues and news documents, this production gives us a new picture of this complex man and his fascinating contemporaries, from Thurmond, to James Baldwin, to Malcolm X.
