The Old Settler

Triad Stage presents The Old Settler by John Henry Redwood. Love stories come in many forms, and some have the power to surprise us. In a tenement apartment during the Harlem Renaissance, an older unmarried woman was known as an Old Settler. Elizabeth and Quilly, sisters in their fifties, take in a young male boarder named Husband Witherspoon to help with the rent. When Elizabeth and Husband take to liking each other, the tension in the house exposes a thirty-year-old wound in the sisters’ relationship. Overflowing with humanity, warmth, and laughter, Redwood’s play presents a richly textured family tapestry that deals with the poignancy of dashed hopes and the moving nature of one woman’s last chance at love.
