Triad Stage celebrates the upcoming grand opening of its downtown neighbor, the International Civil Rights Center & Museum, and commemorates the 45th anniversary of the historic sit-ins that began at Greensboro’s Woolworth lunch counter on February 1, 1960, with North Star, a play set in North Carolina during that period in the tumultuous 1960s. North Star is the story of Relia, a young African American girl searching for her place to shine. The sit-in movement that started in Greensboro has spread throughout the state, threatening the joyous innocence of a childhood summer. This is a powerful coming of age story for families to enjoy together: a story of children and parents played out against the events that transformed America with the rising of the civil rights movement. Written by Gloria Bond Clunie, North Star won the Theodore Ward Prize for African American Playwriting and Chicago’s Joseph Jefferson Theatre Award for Best New Work.
