About This Show

With music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, West Side Story follows rival gangs–the Jets and the Sharks–as they compete for the ownership of their turfs. A boy from one gang and a girl from the other fall in love despite their affiliations. The couple’s love puts a strain on their loyalty to their friends, adds tension to the rival gangs, and ultimately ends in tragedy. Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the musical was written 40 years ago and is still poignant today. The award-winning score includes “America,” “Tonight,” “Somewhere” and “Maria.”
