As an African-American lingerie seamstress in 1905 New York, Esther’s success relies on her discretion. Her clients take her into their boudoirs and their confidence. Her cloth merchant, an Orthodox Jew who becomes Esther’s kindred spirit, harbors a forbidden desire. Even her own most private longings remain under wraps until she begins receiving letters from a mysterious man.
