About this show

Dreamland is the story of a home healthcare aide and amateur "chanteuse" in upstate New York, Bunny Clark, who falls madly in love with the music of blues singer Alberta Hunter and vows to learn to "chirp the blues" as passionately and soulfully as her heroine. Instantly, Bunny confronts a number of obstacles: her own blond, Irish Catholic identity, a provincial fiancé who thinks she's finally gone too far with what used to be her quirky obsession with Motown and the Supremes, and a range of other personal risks, including the fact that in 1984 when the play takes place, Madonna is the musical icon of most people her age. But the most significant hurdle to overcome is her lack of faith in her own ability to sing this music with sufficient authenticity. Bunny's journey to singing the blues from her "heart and not her lips" brings her closer to people, feelings and truths she's never before acknowledged.
