About This Show

A Raisin in the Sun is a landmark American classic by Lorraine Hansberry. It marked the first play written by an African-American woman to be produced on Broadway. Set in the 1950’s in Chicago’s South side, Mama Lena Younger and her family eagerly await her deceased husband’s $10,000 insurance settlement. Each dreams of a better life: Mama, a new home; her son, of being an independent businessman; and her daughter, of becoming a doctor. Through their dreams, we discover the strength, identity, power and heritage of an African-American family.
