About This Show

The gripping story of a country on the brink of destruction, an American family arrives in Rwanda in early 1994 and confronts life-and-death realities immensely beyond their depth. Set on the eve of the Rwandan Genocide, in which 800,000 people died, The Overwhelming portrays the rancorous hatred taking hold of this troubled country as it becomes divided and defined by the tribal rift between its principal tribes, the Hutus and Tutsis. Although decidedly a drama of harrowing intensity, the play also has both comic and thriller-like elements, similar in atmosphere to a Graham Greene novel.
