The Distant Sound

About the Show

Unique and ahead of his time, the great Franz Schreker forged his own musical language in turn-of-the-century Vienna. In Der ferne Klang (The Distant Sound), a young composer sets out in search of his “distant sound” – abandoning his true love to a life of degradation and prostitution. Schreker’s extolled masterwork is an intense story of sacrifice, sexual exploitation, and a tragic mistake that highlights the eternal conflict between personal happiness and artistic fulfillment.

Presented as an Opera-in-Concert. Enjoy an illuminating pre-concert talk with American Symphony Orchestra Composer-in-Residence Richard Wilson at 1:30 in the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse, Rose Building, 10th Floor, 70 Lincoln Center Plaza.
