Work & Show Festival 2005

Tribeca Performing Arts Center’s artists-in-residence program presents the Work & Show Festival 2005. This year’s program features new choreographic works by Kraig Patterson, Richard Rivera, Christina Suarez, and Ellis Wood. It also features a new musical chamber piece by Joseph-Vernon Banks and Steve Mackes; a musical adaptation of The Woman in White by Lynn M. Thomson and Linda Dowdell; a multi-media piece by Matriotism (a women’s writers/performance collective); and a new theatrical work directed by Karen Sommers.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23

Suarez, Patterson at 7pm (Dance Performance)
Christine Suarez premieres the Solo Series Project, an episodic new work that combines rigorous movement, evocative text, and original music to unveil intensely personal stories of rebellion. Choreographer Kraig Patterson utilizes world music, gospel and the union of contemporary and classical composers and music from Motown in the premiere of Expensive Shit and other new works.

THURSDAY, MARCH 24

Wood, Rivera at 7pm (Dance Performance)
Veteran Artist-In-Residence choreographer Ellis Wood presents Pignut, a richly layered dance that embraces sheer unbridled movement paired with intelligent narrative. Choreographer and performer Richard Rivera presents three new works: Me, Myself and I, Sola, and The Salsa Project.

Thomson/Dowdell, Banks/Mackes at 7pm (Staged Readings)
Parlour Song, by Lynn M. Thomson and Linda Dowdell, is a musical adaptation of Wilkie Collins’ seminal English tale The Woman in White. Composer Joseph-Vernon Banks and writer and lyricist Steve Mackes collaborate on Madame Walker and the Divine Dream, a musical chamber piece based on the Horatio Algeresque rise of Madame C.J. Walker from poverty to become the first known female African-American self-made millionaire.

Matriotism at 7pm (Theater Performance)
Matriotism weaves movement, music, ritual and audio/visual elements around a rich, original narrative to create Speculum Award, a story about a group of very different women, who all receive a letter from an unknown source informing them that they will receive an award on behalf of an ancestor.

FRIDAY, APRIL 1

Karen Sommers at 7pm (Theater Performance)
Karen Sommers directs a new one-woman show written and performed by Leah Dalessandro Bonnema entitled Woman, a collaboration between the director and performer that bears witness to the struggle of what it means to be female in America, battling stereotypes, paranoias and restrictions.
