The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice

The Tragedy of Othello brought to the stage the exotic world of ‘the Barbarians’, as Muslim visitors to Shakespeare’s London were called. The curious English distrust of foreigners, in this case leading to rampant rumors of their proud, jealous character and murderous habits, made Othello a sure draw to the theater.
