New York City
The Wooster Group presents preview performances of Poor Theater, directed by Elizabeth LeCompte. The production has
been in development for the past year, and is made from a
range of source material that includes the work of three seminal figures
in contemporary art — theater director Jerzy Grotowski, choreographer
William Forsythe, and visual artist Max Ernst.
The impulses that drew the company to this material include the demise of
Ballett Frankfurt, the end of the 20th century, the violent dawning of
the 21st century, and a desire to examine the place of the artist and
live performance in contemporary culture. Poor Theater is structured as a series of simulacra (a representation an image, a specious imitation or
likeness of something).
Wooster Group artists and associates working on the project include: Geoff
Abbas, J. Reid Farrington, Iver Findlay, Ari Fliakos, Sam Gold, Bozkurt
Karasu, Ken Kobland, Christopher Kondek, Elizabeth LeCompte, Margaret
Mann, Gabe Maxson, Sheena See, Scott Shepherd, Jennifer Tipton, Kate
Valk, and Ruud van den Akker.
There are no performances Wednesday and Thursday, November
24 and 25.
