Menopausal Gentleman is an audacious ode to the permutations of the female body of Peggy Shaw, dealing with the hormonal changes of menopause in a 53-year-old woman passing as a 35-year-old man. The show came about as Shaw prepared to appear in The Slow Drag as Billy Tipton, a woman who impersonated a man throughout a lengthy career as a musician in the ’50s. Shaw decided to fully immerse herself in the role and passed as a man for the duration of her four-month contract.
On December 23, Shaw headlines a gala performance benefit celebrating the 20th anniversary of the WOW Cafe. The evening features Lois Weaver, Carmelita Tropicana, Terry Dame, Betsy Crenshaw, Spiderwoman Theater, Sharon Jane Smith, Lavinia Coop, Lisa Kron, Madeline Olnek, and others.
