Jean Cocteau Repertory presents Inés de Castro –the first reading of its New Classics Reading Series, starring Daphne Rubin Vega. The NCRS is a program dedicated to producing readings of primarily new translations and adaptations of classic work, or new work that evokes classic themes, styles, or traditions.
The story of Inés de Castro surrounds the assassination of Inés de Castro — Spanish mistress to the Prince of Portugal — whose death provoked a brutal civil war that led to a fierce confrontation between the prince and his father, the king. This highly successful dramatization by Scottish playwright John Clifford has been produced throughout the UK, recorded for the BBC, and even made into an opera.
