About This Show

This Henry 5 is performed by the mysterious ‘Henry,’ a street vendor of the ilk currently selling Iraqi playing cards. He uses rough media, simple objects, a Balinese shadow screen, and overhead projector and plastic soldiers bought at 99 Cent Stores to render Shakespeare’s epic.

Thaddeus Phillips’s La MaMa solo shows include a puppet version of King Lear drawn out of a suitcase, The Tempest while splashing in a children’s swimming pool, and Lost Soles, a saga of a tap dancer who escapes the mob by fleeing to Cuba and gets stuck there during Castro’s takeover. He also staged and appeared in The Filament Cycle, a two-character multimedia play in which a woman fleeing from the Balkan wars encounters an American film artist intent on shooting disasters. His last production, The Earth’s Sharp Edge, was a large cast play exploring our fears of terrorism and Extreme Islam.

Director Tatiana Mallarino, originally from Bogota, Colombia, brings her own experience of surviving the Panama Invasion to Henry 5. She created the role of Leila Khaled in Phillips’ The Earth’s Sharp Edge last Spring.
