Babylon, Long Island

Babylon, Long Island is a one person show written and performed by Gregg Tomé, set in the New York suburban town of Babylon, Long Island and based on real people and events that he experienced in the late 1970?s while in his teens. 70?s music and cultural references imbue the piece with the spirit of that era, and authentic photographic images of the Long Island town provide a visual backdrop and reference to a faded suburbia.

The story is revealed through nine characters, young and old, who represent a cross-section of the town?s inhabitants, with each person connected to the unfolding plot.
Universal themes emerge, such as the adolescent struggle of trying to define oneself, while at the same time needing to be different; the possibility of wasting one?s youthful talents; and the indelible ties every person has to the place they grew up. Comparisons made to the ancient city of Babylon expose the dangers of hedonism and the value of learning lessons from the history of the past.
