Written and directed by Rufus Norris, this saccharine-free adaptation of Charles Perrault’s 17th Century classic reveals what happened after Beauty’s 100-year slumber and that magical kiss. The Princess awakens to a perilous world of bungled spells, awful smells and a forest full of trouble where her Prince is a cowardly lad and she suffers an ogre of a mother-in-law – literally. Mixing the mythic and the macabre on a rustic stage filled with wonderfully weird surprises, the Young Vic has crafted a visually bewitching and sophisticated New York premiere that begs the question, “does anyone really live happily ever after?”
Appropriate for children 8 and up.
