Written in 1896 by Henrik Ibsen, “John Gabriel Borkman” is a structurally perfect play in that all of its pieces fit perfectly together. The twin sisters are equally desperate to restore what each has lost; husband and wife equally determined not to take the first step toward reconcilliation; father and son equally devoted to the pursuit of his dream and old friends equally addicted to a delusional self-image. Ibsen is exciting because he is undeniably honest in his portraits of human beings and how we behave.
