The Folksbiene Yiddish Theatre presents An American Family by Miriam Kressyn, based on the play Morning Star by Sylvia Regan. This moving saga traces a turn-of-the-twentieth-century Lower East Side immigrant family struggling to assimilate into American life and hold onto its Jewish identity. The play follows an immigrant woman starting anew, raising her three daughters during the tumultuous 1920s in Manhattan’s ragtime era. From labor uprisings to World War I and the Great Depression, the audience goes along on a journey of joy and sorrow, of upheaval, renewal, and ultimately a celebration of the American Jewish experience. Eleanor Reissa directs, with musical direction by internationally known conductor of Yiddish music Zalmen Mlotek.
The play is performed in Yiddish with a live simultaneous English translation available.
