About This Show

For over 15 years, Nativity: A Life Story has provided an escape for NYC audiences from “Holiday Commercialism” and instead brought “spiritual fervor, showbiz glamour, African American pride, and a celebration of women” (NY Times) to thousands of people. The creators — James Stovall, Hattie Winston, Harold Wheeler — bring Nativity in a special concert version downtown to Joe’s Pub with a stellar cast led by vets Lillias White & Keith David. Share the Christmas story from Mary’s perspective – based on the international Shrines of the Black Madonna – in a powerful concert of spoken word narrative, and music that is saturated with African traditional tunes, Gospel, Jazz and R&B.
