An Experiment With An Air Pump is a play that traverses the dawn of two centuries. In 1799, a northern English house buzzes with scientific experiments, furtive romance and farcical amateur dramatics. In 1999, in our present-day world of scientific chaos and genetic engineering, this same house reveals a dark secret buried for 200 years. The moral dilemma presented in regards to scientific experimentation in the earlier time mirrors that of the present day and we see how these challenges are borne by those depicted: the young, the mature, the idealistic, the cynical, the romantic.
