About This Show

Everybody knows about New Orleans’ rich musical tradition – but an even more deeply rooted tradition in the Crescent City is one of perpetual reinvention. It’s a city that’s been reborn countless times over the course of its multi-cultural history, a legacy vibrantly reflected in its music:

Nolatet features some of New Orleans' key jazz musicians: Contemporary drummer extraordinaire Johnny Vidacovich's long resumé includes playing with New Orleans legends Professor Longhair and James Booker in the 1970s and 80s. While also a staple in city's funk scene, he is perhaps best known as one of the founding members of the modern jazz quartet Astral Project, the band that, after 35 years, is still going strong. Pianist Brian Haas is one of the founding members of the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, who's modern music has blended jazz, rock, and funk for the past 20 years. Mike Dillon is an experimental vibraphonist and percussionist known for his work in Garage-A-Trois, Les Claypool's Fancy Band and Critters Buggin. Composer, bassist, bandleader and multi-instrumentalist James Singleton presents true modern experimental jazz that also draws from rock and orchestral roots. A real powerhouse of improvisers, each a respected player in their own right, Nolatet is a force of nature to experience live.

"Fearless and exploratory, the four abundantly talented and outside-the-box musicians who make up New Orleans' newest band have played together countless times in various outfits, and Nolatet is a brand new sonic machine." -NolaVie.com, February 2016
"It's a carnivalesque fun-ride of exciting proportions: a mirror where shapes are distorted, and you never know where you're going but you're going fast, in and out of tunnels, over hills and down steep slopes. It seems like you're going to careen right into solid rock but you never do. And when it's over, you want to do it again. That's what listening to "Dogs" is like." -Classicalite, March 2016, review of Nolatet's debut album "Dogs"
Nolatet and its members were nominated for 6 OffBeat Magazine Best of the Beat Awards in 2016:  "Best Contemporary Jazz Artist," "Best Contemporary Jazz Album for 'Dogs'," "Best Vibraphonist," "Best Drummer," and "Best Bassist."
Nolatet's sophomore recording, "No Revenge Necessary," was released in 2018 also to rave reviews, and the quartet spent part of the post-pandemic summer of 2022 touring this new music. Listen and Purchase
