New York City
New-Street Poets is a spoken word play written and performed by Reginald Burch a.k.a. Mikumari, LeDerick Horne, Scott Raven Tarezvits, and Justin Woo and directed by LeDerick Horne and Justin Woo.
Set in the recent past of New Brunswick, NJ, New-Street Poets confronts the loss of urban culture to urban renewal. As forces of redevelopment attempt to bulldoze the New Street Café, home of a vibrant open-mic, four dynamic poets struggle to keep their community alive. The audience will witness the way gentrification and commercialism have affected a diverse community of writers. Through straight talk, rhythm and humor New-Street Poets will explore what happens when different classes of people meet , when underground art becomes popular, and what a poet has to do to keep his love of poetry alive.
