The Academy Theatre presents Company, featuring music/lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by George Furth. Company is a series of vignettes following five married, once married, or soon-to-be-married couples and their mutual friend, Bobby, a 30-year-old bachelor unable to connect in a long-term relationship. Sondheim wrote the show in the 1970’s but this production updates the show, having it take place in New York City, 2004 and features a lesbian couple. (The original part of David and Jenny has now been changed to Jenny and Dharma, a partnered couple with 2 kids, living in the village.) The relationships are presented primarily through Bobby’s jaundiced eye. Eventually, Bobby learns that while relationships aren’t perfect, they are a necessary part of experiencing life.
