About This Show

Broadcast in HD on our 46′ Screen

Adriana Lecouvreur unites a stellar cast, headed by star soprano Angela Gheorghiu as Adriana, Jonas Kaufmann as Maurizio, and Olga Borodina as Princesse De Bouillon. If you are a fan of Puccini, you will love this opera by his contemporary, Francesco Cilea, which is just as rich, melodic, and romantic. The story of jealous rivalry in love is set between two worlds of the theatre and the aristocracy, and this new production by David McVicar brings the 18th-century atmosphere to life in rich historical detail. “Kaufmann and Gheorghiu radiate sexiness” (Financial Times) in this production from the Royal Opera House.

Against this backdrop, Adriana Lecouvreur offers a fictionalized account of a real French actress of the same name, leading lady of the Comédie-Française in Paris, who was believed to have been poisoned by a love rival. In the opera Lecouvreur is the victim of the jealous Princess of Bouillon, who envies her relationship with a handsome Count. First performed in 1902, the opera blends personal and political intrigue in 1730s Paris in music of extraordinary warmth, finesse, and grand passions.
