About the Show

In 1998, Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old gay university student was
kidnapped, beaten and left to die, tied to a fence in the middle of the
prairie outside of Laramie, Wyoming. Playwright Moises Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project went to Laramie, where they conducted interviews with friends of Matthew, friends of the accused, police and local clergy, university professors, and farmers. All shared their honest reactions to the crime, the issues it raised, and the national attention the media brought to their town. Composed entirely from their own words, The Laramie Project powerfully explores the effects of hate and violence upon a community; while also demonstrating the healing powers of compassion and tolerance. Penny Paul directs.
