About This Show

Reminiscent of Pinter and Mamet in style and language, Closer, by Patrick Marber, promises an explosive tale of infidelity, psychosexual conflict and compromised morality so prevalent in modern romantic entanglements.

Time magazine has called Closer “…a bruising dissection of modern relationships,” and “…a shrewd piece of contempo-realism…in which people with choices almost always make the wrong one.” Closer raked in awards in 1997, including the Olivier Award for Best Play, the London Critics Circle Theatre Award, the London Evening Standard Award, the New York Drama Critics Award, and the Time Out Award. It was also nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play. Having already been turned into a major motion picture helmed by veteran film director Mike Nichols, Closer elicited powerful yet subtly nuanced performances from Clive Owen and Natalie Portman, winning them both Oscar nominations and Golden Globe awards.

The Devanaughn production will be a watershed event, directed by Dani Duggan, a veteran of Dublin’s famed Abbey Theatre, who hopes to convey the tension within Marber’s delicate structure and witty, savage language; fully exploring the minefield of emotional dependence and independence not present in the cinematic version or previous theatrical productions of Closer.
