The Romance of Magno Rubio is a new play about a love-struck Filipino farm laborer. Set in Depression-era California, this romantic comedy joyously entertains with inspired silliness, kinetic movement and song. Filipino migrant farm worker Magno Rubio has fallen in love through a lonelyhearts ad, but his poor command of English stands in his way. A literary friend comes to the rescue and corresponds with Rubio’s sweetheart until they are able to meet at last. Written by Lonnie Carter and directed by Loy Arcenas, it is based on a short story by Filipino-American writer Carlos Bulosan.
