About This Show

The Nomad Theatre Company presents Sophie Treadwell’s early 20th-century classic of feminist theatre. MACHINAL was a 1928 Broadway hit, based partly on the infamous 1927 trial of Ruth Snyder, the first woman to be put to death in New York’s electric chair. The play follows its young heroine through nine short episodes that chronicle the depersonalizing effect of modern social and political structures. Exhausted by her tedious job, cajoled by her mother into a loveless, mercenary marriage, she commits a desperate act in an attempt to be free. This expressionistic masterpiece, foresees modern anxieties about the nature of love, truth and justice.
