About This Show

South Coast Repertory’s production of Sophocles’ Antigone is directed by Kate Whoriskey and features Alyssa Bresnahan in the title role.
The production uses a translation by Brendan Kennelly, and features music and sound by Rob Milburn and Michael Bodeen, and choreography by Randy Duncan.

In Antigone, a brutal civil war has just concluded, and while no families escape the slaughter, Antigone’s family is particularly devastated. Both of her brothers are dead, sacrificing their lives as the leaders of the opposing sides. Unwilling to abide by Creon’s decree that only the dead from the winning side be buried, she defies her king and buries her other brother as well. Her refusal to sacrifice moral principles in the face of authority has made Antigone one of literature’s most important characters, and Antigone one of our most revered plays.
