About This Show

Evy Meara is a cabaret singer and a recovering alcoholic. She returns home from rehab, to her loyal, but oddball, friends and teenage daughter, Polly – all of whom want to help. But Evey doesn’t handle stress very well and alcohol is way too available. The reappearance of an ex-lover exacerbates the situation. Evy’s 17-year-old daughter Polly, a child of divorce, wants to move in. At the brink of womanhood, she needs her mom. But as the play evolves, Polly will find herself giving care more than she receives it.

The Gingerbread Lady was the first show Neil Simon wrote that had an openly gay character in it. Although Boys In The Band “came out” prior to this show, this was the first time Simon had a lead character talk openly about his lifestyle choice.
