Before Tommy, before Jesus Christ Superstar and long before Rent, the world was taken by storm with the first rock musical ever produced on Broadway, Hair, written by actors Gerome Ragni and James Rado, with music composed by the eclectic Galt MacDermot. Although it’s been 40 years since Hair had its off-Broadway run at Joseph Papp’s New York Public Theatre, and 39 years since producer Michael Butler moved it uptown to the Biltmore where it reigned for over 1700 performances, Hair continues to set records as one of the most-produced and most-seen musicals ever, with several thousand productions in over sixty countries. Its stirring music, innovative staging and messages of peace and love remain timeless.
