Voyeurs de Venus centers on the fictitious character of Sara Washington, a highly regarded African-American cultural anthropologist, and her struggle to tell the story of Saarjtie Baartman — a Khosian woman from southern Africa who, due to the voluptuousness of her form, spent the last portion of her short life on display throughout Europe as a kind of pseudo-scientific side show. Sara wrestles both with the demeaning nature of Saartjie’s unjust treatment at the hands of patrician Europeans, and with her own fraught and confusing relationship with her subject. Russ Tutterow directs.
