The Girl in the Iron Mask

Adapted from Alexandre Dumas’ classic romance by R. L. Nesvet, The Girl in the Iron Mask is an all-female swashbuckling drama. Louise Marchiali is the most dangerous secret in the Bastille (and the unknown twin sister of King Louis XIV). When – with the assistance of Carmelite nun Artémis and the Duchess of Montpensier – Louise gets the chance to escape, she resolves to walk in her brother’s shoes and make history.

In place of the male heroes of the original, Nesvet has interpolated female ones – introducing audiences to the historical military commander and novelist Anne-Marie-Louise, Duchess of Montpensier; and the fictional Afro-Caribbean escape artist Céssette, namesake of the Haitian grandmother whose history haunts much of Dumas’ writing. The famous Musketeers are replaced by the Queen’s Guard, a construct based on the documented existence in many countries throughout history of corps of elite female guards assigned to guard the royal family.
