New York City
Tartuffe is a deep comedy in rhymed verse — one of Molière’s most popular — and a perfect fit for indoor staging in the historic Pleasant Home. The comedy follows the plight of Orgon, a middle-aged, bourgeois bigot and prude, who has been swindled by the hypocritical opportunist Tartuffe. In 1669, Molière claimed the play to be a satire on religious hypocrisy, and through the years audiences have enjoyed Richard Wilbur’s translation of this classic from the original French. Oak Park Festival Theatre’s production is set in the modern South.
