About the Show

Recently revived in Europe to blockbuster success, Chicago Opera Theater brings its own unique twist to this musical comedy. Renowned Shostakovich scholar Gerard McBurney scores the music for chamber orchestra to capture the operatta’s lighter mood.

Sasha and Masha are recently married, but are unable to secure an apartment together because of the housing crisis. Living in separate locations, the newlyweds resort to romantic trysts in museums and the subway. The predicament is played out in a hilarious mix of memorable songs, satire and spectacle – which made the operetta a blockbuster during its premiere in 1959.
