About This Show

Aguijón Theater Company, in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes of Chicago, presents Federico García Lorca’s La Casa de Bernarda Alba. The play is “a drama of women” as the poet himself subtitled his work. Upon her husband’s death, Bernarda Alba plunges the household into deep and lasting mourning, closing all doors and forbidding her daughters from having any contact with the outside world. The five daughters, of marrying age, cannot bare this sentence and the appearance of a possible husband unchains a series of conflicts among them and with their mother. The silence in the house, the slow progression of time in an illusionless existence, the generational clash between mother and daughters, and the yearning for freedom are the main elements of this enigmatic work. Marcela Muñoz directs.
