The Exonerated, by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen, examines the American criminal justice system and its ability to protect society as it struggles to preserve individual rights. Kim Fields, star of the hit TV shows The Facts of Life and Living Single is featured in a cast of ten, the largest production in TheaterWorks’ history.
The Exonerated, which The New York Times called “The #1 play of the year . . . intense and deeply affecting”, won numerous major theater awards during its lengthy Off-Broadway run, including the prestigious Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience.
Culled from interviews, letters, transcripts, case files and the public record, The Exonerated tells the true stories of six wrongfully convicted survivors of death row in their own words. Moving between first-person monologues and scenes set in courtrooms and prisons, the six interwoven stories paint a picture of an American criminal justice system gone horribly wrong – and of six brave souls who persevered to survive it.
