About This Show

Curated by Richard Pena, Programming Director, Film Society of Lincoln Center. The Film Society of Lincoln Center joins forces with Guild Hall to present screenings of several of Judy Garland’s best-loved films. Summer Stock reunited Judy and Gene Kelly under the sparkling direction of Charles Walters. The script is funny, and the contributions of Eddie Bracken, Phil Silvers, Marjorie Main, Ray Collins, Hans Conried, and Gloria De Haven are superlative. But honors go to Garland and Kelly, doing what came naturally to two incomparable entertainers. Besides “You Wonderful You,” “Happy Harvest,” and “If You Feel Like Singing, Sing,” there are Kelly’s “squeaky board/newspaper” dance and the quintessential coupling of Judy and “Get Happy.” Talkback to follow with Nicolas Rapold, senior editor at Film Comment and contributor to The New York Times, the Village Voice, Artforum, and Sight & Sound. He co-programs the Overdue series at the 92YTribeca and has also programmed work at the Museum of the Moving Image and the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
