My Fair Lady

Henry Higgins, an arrogant, irascible professor of phonetics, boasts to a new acquaintance, Colonel Pickering, that he can train any woman to speak so “properly” that he could pass her off as a duchess – even Eliza Doolittle, a young woman with a decidedly Cockney accent whom he found selling flowers on the street. Higgins and Pickering make great progress with the girl and even take her to the horse races and a grand ball. Nevertheless, they still treat Eliza as a mere experiment and not as a human being. When Eliza runs away, Higgins realizes that she is more than just a project. With songs like “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “On the Street Where You Live,” “Wouldn’t It be Loverly,” “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face” and “Get Me to the Church on Time,” My Fair Lady remains one of the richest and most intelligent romantic musical comedies ever written.
