About This Show

Touring together for the last time, the incomparable Vermeer String Quartet has long been known for its warmly lavish interpretations and technical mastery. With performances in practically every major city in North and South America, Europe, the Far East, and Australia, the Quartet has achieved international stature as one of the world’s finest ensembles.

Formed in 1969 in Marlboro, the Quartet’s members (violinist Shmuel Ashkenasi, violinist Mathias Tacke, violinist Richard Young, and cellist Marc Johnson), are originally from Israel, Germany, New York, and Nebraska, thus providing a unique blend of musical and cultural backgrounds. They have been associated with Northern Illinois University as “resident artist faculty” since 1970, and are also Fellows at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England.

“Out of this alchemy is born a thing of beauty which one can define, without hesitation, as perfection.” — Suisse, Switzerland
