About this show

Despite being written in 1963 by Robin Maugham, nephew of the famous W. Somerset Maugham, The Servant has never been performed on stage in America. Out of print for decades, TheatreWorks has been granted special access to the script by Oxford University. The play takes a sharp look at British class relations through a dramatic turning of the tables between "Oxbridge" bachelor, Tony and his contemptuous manservant, Barrett. As Barrett slowly realizes and exploits his expanding powers over his master, Tony steadily loses his authority and becomes enslaved by his own employee. Maugham's sharp wit helps to create a chilling and tightly-woven psychological drama about the intricacies of class and servitude.
