About This Show

The Ballad of Silverheels arose from the story of a woman about whom not much is known. Whether she existed at all is arguable. What is certain is that her legend left enough of an impression on the minds of people to have persisted for well over one hundred years in local folklore as: dance-hall girl, entrepreneur, humanitarian, compassionate but proud woman. Through memorable song and whimsical dialogue, The Ballad of Silverheels tells how this woman chose to upgrade her career from a New Orleans parlor girl to business woman by opening a dance-hall in a small Coloradan mining camp. Not long after winning the affection of the miners, Silverheels and her new lover, Baer Winchester, find themselves the target of the town’s unofficial mogul who will stop at nothing to maintain his imperialistic hold on the camp. The catastrophe that ensues forces Silverheels to profoundly reconfigure her role in the community and, ultimately, the world at large. The Ballad of Silverheels is presented as part of the 2006 Boulder Fringe Festival.
