New CUBE Ensemble kicks off the year with their take on Peter Brook's adaptation of Bizet's Carmen. The opera, directed by Reshmi Hazra and Music Direction by Emily Barrett.
First performed on March 3, 1875 at Opéra Comique in Paris, France, Carmen tells the story of Don Jose, an unstable young corporal, flees his hometown to begin life anew in a small factory town. Carmen, a gypsy, seduces Don Jose and trouble ensues. Don Jose consequently goes on a rampage and kills Carmen's various lovers and finally Carmen herself. In this production, CUBE Ensemble utilizes Viewpoints and takes inspiration from Brecht, modern Gypsy culture, and integration of the classic opera with modern music practice. The opera is performed almost entirely in French.
