About This Show

The inaugural production at Victory Gardens at the Biograph is the world premiere of Charles Smith’s Denmark, a historical drama about freed slave and insurrectionist Denmark Vesey. With his distinctive flair, Smith explores the relationship between our commitment to fulfill our personal hopes and dreams, versus our obligation to a greater public good during a time when the need for that greater public good is dire. In 1822, Denmark Vesey used his new earnings as a carpenter not to free the woman he loved but to plan a slave uprising in Charleston, South Carolina.
