About This Show

Profiles Theatre presents the American Premiere of the award-winning drama Apple by Vern Thiessen, for a limited seven-week engagement from April 20, 2007 through June 3, 2007 at the Profiles Theatre, 4147 N. Broadway, Chicago.

Apple is a haunting tale of sex, secrets and second chances. Andy has just lost his job and finds his sixteen-year old marriage to Lyn in crisis. When he meets Samantha, a beautiful and sensuous young woman, Andy sees a chance to start life over again. What happens next shatters Andy’s image of who he is and what he thinks he wants.

“Critics’ Pick! A lively, visceral and involving play. Thiessen’s appealing drama mixes potent themes with surprising complications!”
-Chris Jones, CHICAGO TRIBUNE

“In Profiles Theatre’s U.S. Premiere, the waves of love, passion and need run deep, and in surprising patterns, giving APPLE a cumulative emotional wallop. Brady Fuqua is a revelation, capturing the play’s strange undertow to ideal effect!”
-Hedy Weiss, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

“In Profiles’ sexually daring American Premiere, Darrell W. Cox turns in a quietly unsettling and organic performance opposite an excellent ingénue, Brady Fuqua!”
-Christopher Piatt, TIME OUT CHICAGO

“Four Stars! APPLE is fresh, absorbing and honest. Thiessen’s love triangle tale is told with intelligence and subtle intensity. The performances are immaculate. Amy Matheny gives one of the most complete and convincing pieces of acting I’ve seen in a long time!”
-Dan Zeff, COPLEY NEWS SERVICE

“With a magnificent, rhythmically poetic language, Thiessen’s play is a skilled actor’s paradise. Joe Jahraus directs this unbeatable ensemble with a haunting fludidity and a conductor’s musicality, highlighted by William Jason Raynovich’s live cello playing!”
-Brian Kirst, CHICAGO FREE PRESS

Apple received its World Premiere at the Workshop West Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta in 2002. It was the winner of the Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Award for Outstanding New Play in 2002, the Alberta Play Competition and the Herman Voaden National Playwriting Competition. The Edmonton Sun called Apple “an eloquent, resonant story of resurrection and enduring love” and the Edmonton Journal called it “a tightly knotted, carefully crafted play.” Vue Weekly hailed it, “an emotionally powerful play examining honesty in relationships, unintended consequences and, ultimately, true love.”

Vern Thiessen is fast becoming one of Canada’s most produced playwrights. His work has been seen in the US, Europe, and across Canada. Mr. Thiessen’s newest play, Shakespeare’s Will, will be seen at the Stratford Festival this summer and has been optioned for the West End, as well as NY.
